Panic Attacks: Managing Sudden Overwhelming Fear

Panic attacks are sudden episodes of intense fear or discomfort that peak within minutes. They are often accompanied by physical symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath, chest pain, or dizziness. Many people experiencing a panic attack may feel as though they’re losing control or having a heart attack. Panic attacks can occur unexpectedly or in response to specific triggers. They are commonly associated with panic disorder but can also accompany other mental health conditions such as anxiety or PTSD. During a panic attack, the body’s “fight or flight” response is activated, even in the absence of actual danger. This response floods the body with adrenaline, causing intense physical sensations often mistaken for medical emergencies. Managing panic attacks involves both short-term coping strategies and long-term treatment. Deep breathing exercises and grounding techniques can help reduce symptoms during an attack. Over time, therapy—especially CBT—can help individuals identify triggers and develop healthier responses to anxiety.
